2.Development of Silicone Rubber Insulators

Silicone rubber has excellent UV aging resistance compared with other polymer insulating materials. In addition, silicone rubber also has excellent properties such as resistance to high and low temperatures, ozone, corona, electrical insulation, low compression set rate, and good surface hydrophobicity. Although epoxy resin and ethylene propylene rubber also have hydrophobicity on the initial clean surface, they may be directly lost (surface deterioration) or indirectly lost (dirt coating) under operating conditions. This loss of hydrophobicity is irreversible. The interior of silicone rubber materials is rich in uncross-linked or incompletely cross-linked hydrophobic small-molecule siloxanes, which can diffuse to the material surface and the surface of the dirt layer. This hydrophobic recovery and migration performance is the unique advantage of silicone rubber materials when applied to external insulation.

At present, there are mainly three types of silicone rubber used for external insulation: room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber, liquid silicone rubber (LSR), and high-temperature vulcanized (HTV) silicone rubber. HTV silicone rubber is a mixture of high molar mass (long polymer chain) siloxane polymers and a relatively large amount of inorganic fillers, with the main component being aluminum hydroxide (ATH) flame retardants (up to 50-60% in weight). When arc discharge occurs on the surface, it takes away a large amount of heat through the release and evaporation of the crystalline water it contains, thereby effectively resisting the thermal erosion from the arc. Therefore, HTV silicone rubber has the most excellent heat resistance, resistance to leakage tracking and electrical erosion.

From the application history of silicone rubber materials in the field of external insulation, in 1967, Germany began trial operation of two-component RTV silicone rubber rod insulators on lines. Later, in order to improve the weather resistance and electrical erosion resistance of insulators, in 1979, American companies began to develop HTV silicone rubber rod insulators, which were applied to transmission lines. Due to their excellent outdoor application performance, It has gradually replaced RTV. China began the research and development of composite insulators and the trial operation of products from 1981 to 1990. Based on the summary of domestic and foreign experience in silicone rubber insulators, it clearly defined the technical direction of using HTV silicone rubber as the main material of insulators from the very beginning, and large-scale application was formed in the 1990s.

3.TID POWER's outlook for the future in response to the continuous

development of silicone rubber

After nearly 40 years of practice, a universal consensus has been formed worldwide that HTV silicone rubber is currently the best external insulating material and has become the established technology for composite insulators in overhead transmission lines. As one of the high-quality insulator manufacturers in China, TID POWER has been engaged in production and research in this field for many years and has gained the trust of many customers from all over the world. In the future, we will continue to focus on this region and exert greater strength for the development of insulators! For more information, please contact us.
